If you follow me on instagram you have heard me frequently speak about antioxidants. I won't geek out on you too much here (insert emoji with glasses) but this is an important topic that I want everyone to have a better understanding of. You know the bit, when you know better, you do better!
Antioxidant is a word we hear so often these days, but what are they and why should we care? An antioxidant is a substance that inhibits oxidation, in a nutshell it stops or delays damage to our cells. They clean up our cells by removing waste products called free radicals. Free radicals are compounds that are highly reactive, they can attach to normal cells and damage them. Damaged cells can lead to health issues, including cancer. The human body naturally produces both antioxidants and free radicals, but due to many daily contributors, free radicals far outnumber the antioxidants in our body. Some of the daily contributors we face are, blue light, sun exposure, poor diet, smoking, medications, toxicity or chemical exposure, high amounts of stress and many others.
Why all the hype?
Antioxidants do so much for our body and helps it function at optimum levels. If this hasn’t convinced you yet, take a look at a few of these health benefits.
Antioxidants help to:
~Slow the signs of aging
~Give you healthier, more youthful, glowing skin
~Reduce cancer risk
~Support proper detoxification
~Achieve a longer life span
~Protect against heart disease and stroke
~Lessen the risk for cognitive problems, such as dementia
~Reduce the risk for vision loss or disorders like macular degeneration and cataracts
How do I up my antioxidant intake?
The good news is, there are so many amazingly tasty foods and herbs that contain high levels of antioxidants. This is why it is so important to fill more of your daily intake with real food. A few of my favorite daily beverages are antioxidant rich so it’s a win win! My go to are Matcha tea, Kombucha and Ningxia Red. Daily Harvest is one of my favorite splurges, they have so many nutritious and convenient options with high antioxidant levels. Some other foods and spices you can enjoy while getting some antioxidants in your life include: Goji berries, wild blueberries, dark chocolate, pecans, elderberries, kidney beans, cranberries, blackberries, cilantro, clove, cinnamon, oregano, turmeric, cumin, parsley, basil, ginger and thyme. Lots of yummy options! Remember to buy these items organic as much as you can, putting pesticides back in your body is counteractive.
